Ramblers Cultural Day Part 1: Park Grange woods sculpture trail to Meadowhall
I walked with the Sheffield ramblers. We caught a bus from Meadowhall to Kimberworth,Rotherham. We entered wood / parkland called Park Grange woods. Immediately we saw the first of 10 naked people.
The ideas for the sculptures came from a workshop the sculpture Marcela Livingston did with imaginative children. The children’s poet laureate Matt Black, sourced or wrote a poem for each sculpture, sadly as the poems were on metal plaques, all but the first had been stolen.
1. Zena the rock climber
2 Stan the stable boy. A shy character.
3. Morris miner. The children developed a whole story about how he found a pot of gold digging whilst digging the gold. Then used it to fund a sailing trip to far away lands.
4. Crow girl. She had wooden hollow legs. She was a thrift who hid stolen loot in her legs. No one ever dared ask about her childhood.
5. Yazier. A nature lover, perhapas she is knelt to look at a plant.
6 Slip hand Suzy. She is an old lady, having a rest after long day at a pottery wheel.
7. 2 dinners ignatiu . A Monk who likes food.
8. Freddy the Fiery Fork-Maker
I don’t seem to have his photo.
9. Brutus young ambitious solider. Good watcher and bit of a worrier.
10. Revolutions, Goddess of Bikes. Use wheels to defend against armies. One time she cut all heads off whole army and they ran around like headless chickens.
A bonus for me was coming back to Meadowhall, behind the Travelodge, I refound one of Sheffield’s elephants đ (Technicolour pachyderms that was originally on Devonshire green.
A bonus of walks finishing at Meadowhall, is the chance to appreciate the artistry of a Godiva sculptural Hot chocolate.
It was handy having a new bag from Lucy Locket Sheffield , around my waist so could get to my phone easily to take pictures, whilst keeping phone safe.
Wild in Art Sculpture Trails
This year I followed trail of Moths in Hull and knights in Lincoln. Last year I followed the elephant trail in Shefgield.
I know where some of the knights and elephants are (see previous 2 dayâs posts) but I do not know where any of the moths are.
Look out for a January post about wild in Art sculptures in 2018.
Sheffield Elephants đ Where some are now
The Artic Monkey Elephant is in the Winter gardens.
I believed the mini herd elephants were returned to the school who designed them. Two were designed by groups based in Sheffield Hallam universiry; therefore they are in the reception of Sheffield Hallam City campus.
The Beat Goes On is on the roof at the back of the Great Gatesby.
Leffie is apparently in the fore court of Direct Cars.
Sheffield Summer is at High Storrs school.
I saw all the big and mini Sheffield elephants; but where are they now????
The Winter Gardenâs Sheffield Christmas Decorations
Where are they now? Lincoln Knights, Hull moths and Sheffield Elephants?
I enjoyed seeing them all! But where are they now? I know about a few elephants, one knight but none of the moths.
Anyone know where any are?
Amelia in Hull are any of the moths still around?
Elephant Parade
Whilst I was in Amsterdam after my fun elephant spotting last year in Sheffield I was delighted to discover the Elephant parade.
On a wet afternoon  when we were sheltering in the Magna shopping centre we came across this elephant on the ground floor.
The mini Elephant Herd
Upstairs there was a whole shop selling elephant parade products, a table to paint elephants or you could even buy elephants to take away to paint.
Elephant parade started in 2006 when Mark Spilks saw an an elephant called Mosa at the time 7months old being fitted for a prosthetic limb in Thailand. Elephant’s in Thailand can lose limbs due to stepping on log mines whilst logging.
In 2007 Rotterdam hosted sculptures of elephants which were then auctioned to raise money for Asian Elephant Foundation.
Subsequent elephants were hosted in Antwerp in 2008, Amsterdam 2009, London 2010 and subsequently Singapore, Hong Kong, Orange County in California, Brazil and many others.
One of the elephant parade, elephants was also on a canal boat in California.
The other elephants seen in Amsterdam shop / gallery.

Sheffield Elephants vs Hull moths
Points for Sheffield
- Bigger scale and more 3D than moths so more area for design.
- As 3D and at ground level could engage with them more; stroke them, or give them a pat on the way past or children could crawl between their legs, of course it was strictly forbidden to sit on them but think there is a few people with pictures of themselves or their children sitting on them. Could even look through the bely of the Steel Elephant.
- Better app because recognized in locations without having to scan QR code.
- Better signs next to elephants which gave information about design and designers unlike minimal signs next to the moths (apart from the moth at Sheffield university that had a full board next to it).
- Moths had little variation on theme yes, more constrained brief but surprised not to see more about insect moths for example how a caterpillar turns into a moth.
- Bigger variety of locations. All moths were hung on walls insdie or outside buildings. Whereas elephants were in a walled garden, in a winter garden and in farms and more.
- There was a mini herd of elephants whereas no mini moths.
- Elephants signed by snooker players and members of Arctic Monkeys.

- They had a moth covered in swavorski crystals.
- Â The moths went national extending as far away as London and Kent.
