I don’t read science fiction, the words fantasy, dystopian and space turn he off. I hating reading or watching fight scenes. I read Cloud Atlas for book club the first section was ok but the sections, got weirder and less comprehensible to me and it was such a big book; off putting for a beginner, contrary to what this article says!

This one is a little deeper into science but, at the same time, not too overwhelming. It takes place on earth but in the future where virtual reality (VR) and game play takes a large role in day to day life. Some people work in this virtual reality, and a lot of people use it to make money. There aren’t a lot of scientific terms that I remember, but getting a handle on the world and all the changes that VR brings about might be a little overwhelming to a newcomer to the genre. I still think this is a good introduction to the genre though as there’s no space travel.
The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. THE ILLUMINAE FILES TRILOGY by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
This is one of the most recommended books I suggest when it comes to Sci-Fi. The format is totally different from anything I’ve ever read. Told in the way of pictures, messages, emails, video surveillance, and so much more, the difference in the format makes this a speedy and light read. It’s a brutal read though. Full of death, violence, chaos, political war, and so much more! Its not too technological and is very easy to understand. There are scientists and experts but they explain things to the normal people on the ships, making it easy for us normal readers.
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Chabon loves to mix genre writing with literary fiction, usually with success, though we think this book, set in an alternate history version of the present day in Alaska, is his finest achievement so far. It seems at least some people agree, seeing as the novel won pretty much all the big sci-fi awards (the Nebula Award for Best Novel, the Locus Award for Best SF Novel, and the Hugo Award for Best Novel), among others, when it hit stands in 2007

Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut
You’ve probably read this already, and it counts! Vonnegut is a soft entry into science fiction, since he wraps Billy’s time travel so snugly and satisfyingly in satire, metafiction, and postmodernism — and if you already know you love him, you’ll love this one too. If you already hate him, you should obviously choose something else. So it goes.
5. Possibly I would be most likely to read Frankeinstein as it is a classic.
Frankenstein, Mary Shelley
She did it first, and she’s still one of the best — Frankenstein is often considered the first work of true science fiction, though in the collective consciousness the story has migrated firmly into the gothic horror/monster category. If you’re a purist and want to begin at the beginning whenever trying anything new, here’s the beginning. You won’t be sorry.
